Who doesn’t love hot chocolate? It’s the most comforting & warming drink in the world, and personally always takes me right back to my childhood. Although the version I enjoyed as a child was drastically unhealthier… I will never forget the day I revealed my step-dad’s ‘secret recipe’ for his unbelievably delicious hot chocolate, which I had consumed before bed most nights of the week for many years of my life; a very large knob of dark chocolate, a tub of cream (I am not joking) & a dash of cinnamon. Thankfully I was always a very active child!
This recipe is therefore a complete lifesaver for me, as it brings back so many great memories and the same happy emotions, without expanding my waistline at a million miles an hour. Commercial hot chocolates & powders are full of weird & wonderful unpronounceable ingredients as well, so stay away from those and make your own homemade hot chocolate using natural ingredients instead. I promise it will taste so much better and be so much more satisfying knowing exactly what you are putting into your body.
As well as being incredibly tasty, quick & easy to make, this hot chocolate recipe, believe it or not, is actually good for you, so you can enjoy it totally guilt-free! Almond milk has a naturally sweet, nutty flavour, yet contains less calories than even skimmed milk and, since it doesn’t contain lactose, is easier on your digestive system. The almond milk & almond butter give you a healthy dose of plant-based protein and are an excellent source of vitamin E, which contributes to glowing skin & healthy hair. Raw cacao is the unprocessed form of chocolate and is a nutritional powerhouse, bursting with antioxidants and the hormone serotonin, which makes us happy and acts as a natural aphrodisiac. Date syrup is a great natural sweetener and an amazing alternative to refined white sugar, but you can use honey or maple syrup too. I like to add a dash of cinnamon for a hint of warming spice but it is totally optional. This recipe creates a rich, thick hot chocolate that I quite simply can’t get enough of, and I really hope that you can’t too!
